Milan has broken New York's five-year control as the world's top fashion city, whereas Hong Kong and Sao Paulo have glided into the top 10, according to a yearly survey of top fashion cities.
The listing was assembled by the Global Language Monitor, a U.S. based non-profit group that keeps an eye on the frequency of words and phrases in the media, on the Internet and all through the blogosphere.

The world of fashion is ruled by five cities - New York, Rome, Paris, Milan and London - however New York had led the list for five successive years. But, this year, Milan took the top slot followed by New York, Paris, Rome and London.

In a tapering battle for fashion in Asia, Mumbai overtakes Delhi. In Australia, Sydney overtakes Melbourne.

"The global economic reformation has affected the fashion industry just as it has touched everything else," said Millie Lorenzo Payack, a director at the Global Language Monitor."The catwalks were still crowded though with the lights dimmer, the hype a bit more restrained, and recessionistas, of course, thriving."
